Ecdysterone

Ecdysterone, also known as Beta-Ecdysterone or 20-hydroxyecdysone is a naturally occurring steroid that’s found in plants, insects, and some aquatic animals. It’s mainly used within the bodybuilding community in order to build lean muscle mass and tissue.

Since ecdysterone is considered to be a natural alternative to steroids, it’s a powerful product with the associated hormonal complications. It’s believed that ecdysterone work similar to testosterone based on its structure, however, there’s little evidence supporting this.

Why Take Ecdysterone?

Ecdysterone is considered to be an essential signaling molecule, could be a potential anabolic factor and immune system modulator. It’s main used are for:

  • Enhancing protein synthesis
  • Maximizing muscle mass
  • Stimulating fat-loss and metabolism
  • Increasing strength and endurance levels
  • Preventing the loss of muscle mass

Taking ecdysterone does not induce the same expression of genes as would be experienced when taking anabolic steroids. Instead, ecdysterone influences pathways outside the nuclei of muscle cells, increasing the synthesis of muscle proteins, boosting muscle growth. Based on these uses and the properties of ecdysterone, there are a number of benefits associated with ecdysterone, including:

The Ability to Build Lean Muscle Mass

The idea behind building lean body mass with ecdysterone is the way in which it promotes the synthesis of protein. In turn, individuals who take part in resistance training are able to enhance their overall lean body mass. Its main purpose if to stimulate recovery so combining this supplement with high-value proteins, such as chicken, eggs, milk, or fish could essentially enhance results.

Results have been mixed, however, feedback has been positive in terms of users. Russian researchers studied athletes who were put on ecdysterone in combination with a high protein diet. What they found was those who consumed this supplement along with a protein-rich diet, increased their lean muscle mass by six to seven percent and decreased body fat by 10 percent.

Could Help Treat Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become highly brittle and fragile from loss of tissue. This generally occurs due to hormonal changes, a lack of calcium or vitamin D, and age. In 2008. Chinese researchers looked at ecdysterone as a potential treatment. They found that when given to mice, it alleviated their symptoms without any significant side effects.

German researchers also published a paper agreeing with these original findings. Within their study, they fed rats ecdysterone for a month and then measured the thickness of joint cartilage, as well as the thickness of growth plates. They concluded that ecdysterone could potentially treat osteoporosis, however, more testing would need to be conducted in order to be approved for human treatment.

Balance and Lower Blood Glucose Levels

The modern Western diet is full of sugar, sending our blood sugar levels on a daily roller coaster ride. Within a recent study, it was found that ecdysterone was able to lower blood glucose levels without affecting insulin levels.

This is promising for those who suffer from type II diabetes, both in terms of blood sugar and its potential weight loss benefits. Research shows that ecdysterone greatly reduced fat gain when following a high fat diet. As a potential fat-loss supplement, ecdysterone could be used as a preventative measure against obesity.

Unlike anabolic steroids, there are not the same negative effects experienced when taking this supplement. It will not affect testosterone levels as it doesn’t work through related receptors, it will not shrink one’s testicles, has no effect on the hormonal system and does not convert into estrogenic compounds.

Are There Any Side Effects?

There haven’t been any published research within the United States regarding the effects of ecdysterone regarding human performance levels. At this time, there doesn’t appear to be no negative side effects when taken in controlled doses, no hormonal interactions, and the toxicity level is very low.

It’s important to remember that just because a product is natural, does not mean it’s safe to take any dose. Always follow guidelines based on the supplement’s label. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, please refrain from taking ecdysterone.

How Much Should I Take?

Although you can find ecdysterone naturally in over 150 plants, such as Brazilian ginseng, the most common form is through capsule supplements. Based on past studies, it has been found that doses of 5 mg per kg of bodyweight are safe. For the best results, take anywhere from 300 to 500 mg daily.

With that being said, most companies use lower doses, offering supplements that are 50-90 mg total. The best way to take ecdysterone is through multiple doses, as it only stays in the body for a few hours and consume with high-protein meals. Remember, you should always follow the recommendations that are printed on the label. Also, speak with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns before your first dose.
